Greenwood is located 6 miles east of Cool traveling Highway 193 toward Georgetown from the intersection of Highway 49 on Highway 193 . The town was founded by John Greenwood, a trapper and guide who was exploring this remote territory as early as 1844. Greenwood was once a trading post that grew into a thriving town with several hotels, an abundance of stores, saloons, a brewery and even a theater. Fires razed most of the original buildings and it almost became a ghost town as people moved on in search of a livelihood. Greenwood is now a haven for residents who enjoy the serenity of living in the Foothills. Greenwood offers a real mountain feel with tall pine trees and incredible views of the Sierras, sunrises and sunsets and beautiful forested hills.
